IN THIS LESSON

Session 4 brings together the technical foundations needed to capture clean, intentional, and professional-looking video in the field or the studio. Participants explore the essentials of camera equipment — from sensor sizes and focal lengths to the differences between DSLR, mirrorless, cinema and action cameras — and learn how each choice shapes the final image. We clarify core concepts such as resolution, file formats, codecs, and bit-rates, demystifying what actually matters when filming interviews, landscapes, or geological demonstrations.

Lighting and sound are introduced as central creative tools: how to work with artificial lights, microphone types, polar patterns, and the basics of recording clean audio using the right sample rate and bit depth. Finally, we prepare the ground for editing by covering stabilisation, exposure choices, and practical workflows that ensure footage is easy to work with later.

This session equips participants with the confidence to make informed technical decisions and to approach filming with a clear understanding of how to capture high-quality, compelling visual stories in geoscience.
