IN THIS LESSON

Session 4 explores how we move from communicating to people, to communicating with them, and finally to creating solutions together. We look at how geoscience becomes more meaningful and effective when communities are treated as partners rather than audiences. Through examples such as social geoscience work in Indonesia, participatory film-making in Nepal and Turkey, and the Tomorrow’s Cities project, we see how local knowledge, lived experience and collective storytelling strengthen disaster risk reduction and make planning more inclusive. We also look at deliberative tools like citizens’ assemblies and community asset mapping, which bring diverse perspectives into decision-making. The session closes by linking all these methods to a central idea: purposeful communication starts with finding your purpose. Finding clarity of purpose is what allows scientists and practitioners to guide, collaborate and co-create futures that people genuinely want to be part of.
